Korean (MAT) | Master’s Degree

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Licensure offers a secondary (7–12) teaching license in Korean valid for teaching in the U.S. public school systems.

The MAT is an 18-month master’s degree leading to licensure designed for working professionals, who can enroll for the summer in person and work part-time online during the academic year.

MAT students join their Language School for two 6-week summers in Vermont (in Korean) and participate fully in cocurricular activities, from clubs and performances to guest speakers and films to dances and athletics with the immersion and graduate students.

During the academic year between the summers, students take four 7-week asynchronous courses in English together with MAT students from different languages. In the final fall, students complete a 13-week teaching practicum in their preferred state while completing a final 15-week course. This 15-week course is designed to resource students as they do their student teaching and guide them in completing their licensure portfolio.

Spanish | Doctoral Degree

The Doctor of Modern Languages (DML) prepares teacher-scholars in two modern foreign languages. Middlebury’s intent in the design of the DML program is to provide an alternative to the Ph.D. that retains the traditional focus on depth in research while meeting the special needs of language teachers and administrators for competence in the areas of second language acquisition, literature, linguistics and cultural studies.

Before formal admission to the DML program, an accepted applicant completes a summer of candidacy at the L1 School on the Middlebury or Bennington, Vermont campus.

This program is made up of a series of six-week summer sessions over seven years.

Applied Languages: French | Master’s Degree

Acquire specific skills, knowledge, and experience applicable to an individual career path with our one-year Master in Applied Languages in French.

Master’s students spend a 6-week summer in Middlebury at the School of French followed by an Academic Year in Paris where they complete a hands-on practicum combined with academic coursework in specialized disciplines.

Applied Lanugages: German | Master’s Degree

Acquire specific skills, knowledge, and experience applicable to an individual career path with our one-year Master in Applied Languages.

Students spend a summer in Vermont at the German School followed by an Academic Year in Mainz or Potsdam, Germany. Students complete a hands-on internship in Germany combined with academic coursework in traditional subjects, interdisciplinary areas, and pre-professional disciplines. Students can only specialize in language teaching.
