Nursing | Bachelor’s Degree

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program draws from behavioral, natural and nursing sciences. Profiessional nursing at the University of Vermont is presented as both a science and an art. Students prepare for professional nursing practice through a rigorous curriculum that promotes the care of individuals with illness and emphasizes health and the prevention of disease. Clinical experience begins in the second semester of the sophomore year and continues throughout the program.

Nutrition and Food Sciences | Bachelor’s Degree

The B.S. in Nutrition & Food Sciences (NFS) is our most flexible major: It allows you to customize your coursework to fit your educational and career goals. As an NFS major, you will select NFS courses in addition to core college requirements.

An NFS major is a great choice if…

  • -You want to focus on food.
  • -You plan to become a doctor, dentist, physical therapist, or related professional.
  • -You like communicating about science more than you like “doing” it.

Parks, Recreation, and Tourism | Bachelor’s Degree

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism Program prepares students to become leaders in innovative sustainable practices in the recreation and tourism fields; in the provision of high-quality recreation and travel experiences for individual well-being; and in planning and managing leisure systems for environmental quality and societal benefit. The program offers an integrative approach to the study of parks, recreation, and tourism that combines foundational knowledge in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences with professional skills in planning, business operations, and managerial skills.

Public Communication | Bachelor’s Degree

Public Communication (PCOM) is the practice of understanding, designing, implementing, and evaluating successful communication campaigns within a framework that serves the public interest. The PCOM program uses communication to inform and persuade, to build relationships, and to encourage open dialogue in organizations and communities toward resilient solutions. This is accomplished by crafting successful messages through the application of research, theory, technical knowledge, and sound design principles.

Philosophy | Bachelor’s Degree

Philosophy is all about the here and now — we help students develop the reasoning and analytical skills necessary to grapple with real-world contemporary problems.

The analytic and critical skills students develop as a result of grappling with philosophical problems are applicable to decisions that must be made, for example, in industry, debates on public policy, medical ethics, law, and education. On a more personal level, the study of philosophy can help you to understand yourself as a thinking, acting being. Socrates said that “the unexamined life is not worth living.” He meant especially to include self-examination. What beliefs are important to you, and how rationally defensible are those beliefs? What principles do you cite for the actions you perform, and do those principles stand up to scrutiny?

Physics (BA) | Bachelor’s Degree

Physicists are problem solvers. The analytical skills they learn make them versatile and adaptable. The undergraduate physics program at UVM will provide you with a deep foundation of knowledge and practical experience which will prepare you for any field.

Our physics department offers both a bachelor of science (B.S.) and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree. Both degree options allow you to pursue graduate studies or work in industry. The B.A. degree has a more traditional physics focus which can serve as a foundation for careers in physics, research, engineering, law, medicine, business, technical writing, and teaching. Students in the B.A. program take fewer required math and physics courses and have a broader choice of electives.

Physics (BS) | Bachelor’s Degree

Our physics department offers both a bachelor of science (B.S.) and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree. Both degree options allow you to pursue graduate studies or work in industry. Japanese | Bachelor’s Degree

The Japanese Program at UVM offers courses in Japanese language, literature, pop culture and a variety of courses such as history, religion, and art through the Asian Studies Program. Language courses range from elementary to advanced levels, using the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Linguistics | Bachelor’s Degree

Linguistics is the study of language: its structure and how it is used on a day-to-day basis. Since most fields require a working knowledge of language in oral and written communication, a major or minor in Linguistics offers an excellent combination with many other concentrations at UVM, including Foreign Languages, Psychology, Anthropology, and English.

Mathematics (BS) | Bachelor’s Degree

The mathematics curriculum is quite flexible. It is designed to provide a sound basic training in mathematics that allows a student to experience the broad sweep of mathematical ideas and techniques, to utilize the computer in mathematics, and to develop an area of special interest in the mathematical sciences.

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is our most extensive program, complemented with study in an allied field using mathematics in its applications.
