English Language Learning

Improving your written and speaking English language skills can help you with your education, your job, your community life, and more. Vermont residents ages 16 and older can learn or improve their English by getting free one-on-one tutoring from Northeast Kingdom Learning Services.

Northeast Kingdom Learning Services centers are in Hardwick, Island Pond, Canaan, St. Johnsbury, and Newport.

General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Preparation

The General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is a credential that is considered to be equal to a high school diploma. It shows that you have the same knowledge as someone who graduated from high school. Earning a GED involves taking four tests: math, reasoning through language arts (RLA)/writing, science, and social studies. Northeast Kingdom Learning Services can provide you with preparation for these tests.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a tutoring services for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Tutors work with school staff to ensure the student’s needs are being met. Students are referred to Tutorial by supervisory unions, schools, and families.

Health Education Center

The Northern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is one of two regional AHEC centers in Vermont. AHEC supports health care workers and helps you to explore careers in health care.

This regional AHEC offers health careers exploration and science enrichment opportunities for students in grades 5 through 12. It also offers supportive programs for students studying health professions at different education levels. For health professionals, programs include education loan repayment, support for instructors, and continuing education.

HERO Mentoring

HERO (Health Exploration Resources & Opportunities) Mentoring is a free online program for high school students interested in health science. Mentors are medical students at the University of Vermont who lead activities, and provide tutoring and advising.

This program is for students who live in northern Vermont. Applications ususally open in August and close in September each year.

Job Help In Recovery

Free career and life support for Vermonters in recovery is available at your local recovery center. Staff and community members can help:

  • Coach you through mock interviews
  • Support your job search
  • Update your resume and cover letter
  • Aid you in reaching career and education goals interrupted by addiction

Micro Business Development

NEKCA provides a variety of supports to Vermonters in Chittenden, Addison, Franklin, and Grand Isle Counties who earn low- to moderate-incomes. Their Micro Business Development Program is available to help you at any stage of your self employment journey. At Capstone Community Action, you can:

  • Get one-on-one business counseling
  • Participate in business workshops
  • Find finding opportunities
  • and more
  • NEKCA serves Vermonters who live in Essex County, Orleans County, and Caledonia County.

Adult Diploma Program (ADP)

The Adult Diploma Program (ADP) is a new program that replaces Vermont’s High School Completion Program. This program is for Vermont residents ages 16 and older who are not currently enrolled in school who do not have a high school diploma. You will work with Northeast Kingdom Learning Services to create an Adult Education Learning Plan, and take classes.

This program is open to adults with a GED and to those with a high school diploma from a foreign country.

Sustainable Trail Building | Certificate

The one-year online and in-person Sustainable Trail Building Certificate program offers a unique opportunity to jump-start a career as a trail professional through a flexible, part-time program of study. Gain the education and skills needed to learn safe, effective, and ecologically focused trail design and construction techniques. The program is designed to help future trail builders enter a career in this growing field to build better, maintain, plan, and manage essential corridors connecting users to natural, cultural, and historical spaces.

The program is taught through a combination of online, classroom, and in-the-field learning. Tuition includes trail passes to Kingdom Trails and Burke Mountain Bike Park vouchers. Bunk house accommodation is available at no additional cost for participants coming from a distance for in-person class dates.

This program generally runs from September to September, with three in-person weeklong sessions throughout. Two sessions are held in the fall and one in the spring. In addition, participants take part in a paid 100-hour Trailship program with a professional trail organization during the summer to apply their new skills in a real-world setting.
