Workforce Development for Refugees and Immigrants

The Vermont office of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is located in Colchester. USCRI is focused on the needs of immigrants, refugees, and uprooted people. One of those services is workforce development support for youth and adults. This includes:

  • Employment training
  • Job placement
  • Assistance with ongoing workforce training resources

USCRI can also help you with housing, interpreting, legal services, health and mental health, community connections, and other social services.

Program Office

The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Vermont are made up of two regional offices (in northern and southern Vermont) and a program office at the University of Vermont (UVM) Larner College of Medicine. This office has programming that supports three main focus area: healthcare education and career awareness, recruitment, and retention in the career field.

AHEC offers scholarships, programming for UVM students, clinical rotation housing support, programming for middle and high school students, and much more.

Technology Education

Technology for Tomorrow helps you learn how to use technology. They digital literacy programs for older adults and new Americans, as well as workforce development trainings for adults and youth (Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3), and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS))

Tutoring

The Tutorial Center offers academic tutoring for students in Kindergarten through grade 12. Tutoring is offered one-on-one for any subject, grade, or skill level. Scheduling is flexible and offered after-school, evenings, and on weekends.

Health Education Center

The Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is one of two regional AHEC centers in Vermont. AHEC supports health care workers and helps you to explore careers in health care.

This regional AHEC offers health careers exploration and science enrichment opportunities for students in grades 5 through 12. It also offers supportive programs for students studying health professions at different education levels. For health professionals, programs include education loan repayment, support for instructors, and continuing education.

HERO Afterschool Program

The HERO (Health Education Resources and Opportunities) Afterschool Program is for middle and high school students attending the Allen Street Campus of Rutland City Public Schools.

This program connects students with adults who work in healthcare. These medical professions provide health career planning and exploration

MedQuest

MedQuest is a health career exploration program for high school students. You explore different health professions through workshops, job shadowing, and other activities. The program is usually about a week long and help during the summer.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a tutoring services for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Tutors work with school staff to ensure the student’s needs are being met. Students are referred to Tutorial by supervisory unions, schools, and families.

HERO Mentoring

HERO (Health Exploration Resources & Opportunities) Mentoring is a free online program for high school students interested in health science. Mentors are medical students at the University of Vermont who lead activities, and provide tutoring and advising.

This program is for students who live in northern Vermont. Applications ususally open in August and close in September each year.
